Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE)
 
At The O'Farrell High School, students may earn Physical Education (PE) credit through one of two options:
  1. Enroll in a PE course offered by the school, such as CrossFit, Conditioning, or another approved PE course.
  2. Participate in Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE), when eligible and approved by the school.
What is ISPE?
Independent Study Physical Education provides students with an opportunity to complete approved physical education activities outside of the traditional PE classroom setting. Students participate in physical activities independently while following an approved learning plan and completing the required documentation under the guidance of their designated Homebase teacher.
ISPE is a Credit/No Credit course. Students must meet all program requirements to earn credit.
ISPE Requirements for 2026–2027
To participate in ISPE and earn PE credit, students must:
  • Complete and submit all required ISPE enrollment documents.
  • Have a Master Agreement completed and signed by the required deadline.
  • Follow the student's approved ISPE learning plan.
  • Participate in approved physical activities and complete the required number of activity minutes each month.
  • Maintain accurate and complete monthly PE activity logs.
  • Submit PE logs by the required deadlines.
  • Demonstrate participation in physical activities aligned with the school's ISPE learning objectives and applicable California Physical Education standards.
  • Communicate with and receive guidance from the student's designated Homebase teacher.
  • Complete any additional assignments, reflections, assessments, or documentation required by the school.
  • Meet all requirements necessary to receive a Credit grade.
Students who do not complete the required activities, documentation, or assignments may receive No Credit for ISPE.
Required Physical Activity Minutes
Students must complete the following minimum number of physical activity minutes each month.
 
ISPE Activity Logs
Students participating in ISPE are responsible for keeping accurate records of their physical activity. Monthly activity logs must be completed and submitted according to the school's ISPE schedule.
Activity logs should accurately document:
  • Date of activity
  • Type of physical activity
  • Duration of activity
  • Total minutes completed
  • Any additional information required by the ISPE program
Students are expected to submit complete and accurate documentation. Falsifying activity logs or reporting activities that were not completed may result in No Credit for the ISPE course.
Master Agreement
A completed and signed ISPE Master Agreement is required for participation in the program.
The Master Agreement must be completed by the deadline established by The O'Farrell High School. Students may not receive ISPE credit for activities completed before the agreement is fully approved, unless otherwise authorized by the school.
Students and families should carefully review the Master Agreement and all program requirements before beginning ISPE.
Student Responsibilities
Students enrolled in ISPE are responsible for:
  • Completing all required physical activity minutes.
  • Participating consistently throughout the semester.
  • Maintaining accurate activity records.
  • Submitting monthly logs and assignments on time.
  • Communicating with their Homebase teacher regarding questions or concerns.
  • Completing any required assessments, reflections, or other coursework.
  • Meeting all requirements outlined in the student's approved ISPE plan and Master Agreement.
Homebase Teacher Responsibilities
The designated Homebase teacher will provide guidance and monitor student progress throughout the ISPE program. This may include:
  • Reviewing required ISPE documentation.
  • Monitoring student progress.
  • Reviewing monthly activity logs.
  • Communicating with students regarding missing or incomplete work.
  • Providing feedback and support.
  • Determining whether the student has met the requirements for Credit or No Credit in accordance with the school's ISPE program requirements.
Important Information
ISPE is an academic PE course and is not simply a record of extracurricular athletic participation. Students must complete the required physical activity, documentation, and learning activities established by the school.
Students should review all ISPE requirements carefully before enrolling. Failure to meet the required activity minutes, submit documentation on time, or complete required coursework may result in No Credit.
